SONONET / UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC SYSTEMS

Intelligence begins with sensing.

Pithani Systems is developing SONONET, a cooperative underwater acoustic sensing network intended to support the detection, localization, and tracking of underwater activity.

02 / BENEATH THE SURFACE

Underwater awareness is difficult to scale.

Persistent underwater monitoring requires sensing systems that can operate across dispersed locations and make useful observations under changing acoustic conditions. SONONET is being developed to explore a distributed approach to that problem.

03 / DETECTION

Acoustic observations.

Each node listens passively. Wavefronts from an unidentified source reach the nodes at slightly different times, and each node contributes its observation to the network.

04 / TRACKING

A track, with its uncertainty.

SONONET is being developed to combine observations from several nodes into a position estimate with an explicit confidence region, refined as evidence accumulates.

05 / DECISION

SONONET informs. People decide.

The network is designed to report tracks with their confidence and provenance to an operator. It does not determine affiliation or intent, and it does not authorize action.

Cooperative sensing. Network-level awareness.

SONONET is an in-development passive-acoustic sensing system. The concept connects distributed sensing nodes and combines local acoustic observations to support network-level assessment. Technical performance and field capabilities remain subject to testing and validation.
